After a crushing 5–0 victory over Hamburger SV in the Bundesliga, Bayern Munich now turn their attention to their Champions League opener against Chelsea on Wednesday.

In an interview with BR24Sport, Joshua Kimmich looks ahead to the clash at the Allianz Arena.

“We are extremely excited […]. I hope we can bring the energy from today back onto the pitch, and then we’ll see what happens,” said Kimmich.

Bayern are one of the favorites to win the Champions League, but they have lost a lot of players, especially attackers like Kingsley Coman (€25 million to Al-Nassr) and Leroy Sané (free transfer to Galatasaray). They may find it difficult to balance their commitments across all three competitions.

“Quantitatively, we’ve become a bit thinner […], but qualitatively, things are looking pretty good so far,” Kimmich commented on the current squad situation.

However, he also pointed out that it is important to reduce the number of injuries that proved costly last year.

Regarding the transfer spending of Chelsea, which at around €350 million is four times that of the German record champions, Kimmich said:

“€88 million isn’t that bad, spending that in the summer, especially when you consider our turnover.”

He also took a slight dig at English clubs, describing Bayern’s revenue as “honestly earned”.

“Nevertheless, I believe that the biggest problem is not for us at FC Bayern, but rather for, let’s say, the mid-table or lower-table teams in the Bundesliga.”
