Borussia Mönchengladbach were without top scorer Tim Kleindienst as they lost their final game of the season 0–1 at home to VfL Wolfsburg, extending their winless streak to seven matches.

After the match, managing director for sport Roland Virkus delivered further bad news, announcing that Kleindienst will be sidelined for “several months” due to a knee injury involving the meniscus.

“Tim twisted his knee during the match against Bayern. After further examination, it has been confirmed that he will need to undergo knee surgery,” Virkus said in the mixed zone after the defeat to Wolfsburg, according to Kicker.

The operation is scheduled for next week. The club chose not to disclose the diagnosis before the Wolfsburg game to maintain focus on the match.

As a result of the injury, Kleindienst will miss both Germany’s UEFA Nations League Final Four matches in June and Borussia’s pre-season preparations for the upcoming campaign.
