Mainz 05 and Borussia Mönchengladbach played out a 1-1 draw at the MEWA Arena on Friday night.

After a goalless first hal,f in which Mainz suffered a major injury blow when Jonathan Burkardt was forced off, the home side broke the deadlock in the 55th minute when Stefan Lainer turned Paul Nebel’s cross into his own net.

But Gladbach responded immediately when Tim Kleindienst headed in Franck Honorat’s cross for his sixth goal of the season. The Germany international has now scored four goals in his last three Bundesliga matches, finding the net in each of them.

Gladbach pushed for the winner towards the end of the game, with Kleindienst coming close to adding a second, but Robin Zentner made a series of fine saves to ensure the hosts held on for a point.

The result leaves Gladbach ninth and Mainz 12th in the Bundesliga ahead of the weekend’s remaining fixtures.
