Kobbie Mainoo’s 9 potential moves as Man Utd face transfer conundrum over star

Not too long ago Kobbie Mainoo was seen as the jewel of Manchester United’s academy, a midfielder with the poise, vision and technical range that many believed could anchor the club’s midfield for the next decade. But as the summer transfer window nears its close, Mainoo’s Old Trafford future is suddenly in doubt.

Reports suggest the 19-year-old is open to leaving United because he is frustrated by reduced opportunities under Ruben Amorim, who thinks he should only fit in the position occupied by captain Bruno Fernandes. And with contract renewal talks stalling and a host of clubs circling, the coming days could shape not just Mainoo’s career but United’s midfield planning for years ahead.

United are said to value Mainoo between €40 million and €75 million but a season-long loan with an option to buy is emerging as the likeliest path, particularly if United want to retain control over his long-term future.

Here are the leading contenders to land the England star.

Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid

Both Madrid giants are monitoring the situation according to reports in Spain. Real Madrid, seeking depth after midfield injuries, view Mainoo as a player who could learn alongside Jude Bellingham and Eduardo Camavinga without the immediate pressure of being a starter – even if his prime frustration at United is around a lack of opportunities. A loan with an option to buy to the Bernabeu would make most sense for all parties.

Atletico Madrid offer a different appeal: Diego Simeone’s side thrives on energy and tactical discipline and it would be fascinating to see him operate alongside fellow England international Conor Gallagher at the Wanda Metropolitano’s engine room with the path to being a guaranteed starter clearer.

Chelsea

Chelsea, never not linked with a talented young player who may be available, have tracked Mainoo for months and remain strongly interested. The characteristics of their rebuild makes Stamford Bridge a logical destination and the club’s willingness to back young players is clear – even though Mainoo would face significant competition for a starting role in Enzo Maresca’s starting XI. With United reluctant to strengthen a direct rival, however, this move would require significant financial leverage.

Tottenham

Thomas Frank needs a tempo-setting midfielder because of James Maddison ’s season-long injury and Dejan Kulusevski’s own issues. And while Joao Palhinha has landed on loan for the campaign, it is easy to see how Mainoo would thrive under a coach like Frank. However the same caveat applies as at Chelsea: United will not want to improve a rival to finish in the top four.

Brighton

Albion’s reputation for turning young talents into stars makes them an ideal destination for Mainoo to make a major impact and with Brighton not being an expected competitor for a Champions League spot (despite last season’s finishing places) United may be more open to letting him move to the south coast.

Serie A and beyond

Interest is also emerging in Italy. The latest tittle tattle is that Inter Milan and Juventus admire his versatility, while Roma could guarantee more immediate opportunities in a squad keen to embrace youth. Bayern Munich have also been linked, though competition for minutes in Bavaria may be as tough as Old Trafford and that appears a far longer shot.
