Bayern Munich suffered their first Bundesliga defeat of the season on Saturday, losing 2-1 to Mainz.

Speaking after the defeat, Bayern coach Vincent Kompany praised Mainz’s fighting spirit while admitting his side were not at their best.

“We played against a team that showed a lot of life and commitment, a team that was ready to fight for every moment. I don’t think we lacked spirit, we showed that too – but we’ve done better in the past,” said Kompany.

“We weren’t at our best today. This game is over. We’ll use this defeat to light a fire under us over the next few days and prepare for Friday,” the Belgian coach added, referring to Bayern’s final game of the 2024 campaign against RB Leipzig next week.

“We can’t change the result of this game. Defeats always hurt, but we can win so many games in the future. The feeling is there, the team always wants to move forward and improve. The motivation is there. Our only immediate objective is to win on Friday.”
