Kompany praises Bayern reaction, Urbig development and addresses Goretzka situation after PSV win

Vincent Kompany was full of respect for PSV Eindhoven after Bayern Munich’s final league-phase match in the Champions League. Pointing to PSV’s recent wins over Liverpool and Napoli, the Bayern coach explained why the match unfolded as a tough battle — and why Bayern’s response pleased him so much.

Bayern Munich head coach Vincent Kompany struck a measured but satisfied tone after his side closed out the Champions League league phase with a hard-fought 2-1 victory away at PSV Eindhoven. Speaking after the final whistle, Kompany underlined both the quality of the opponent and the importance of Bayern’s response on a demanding European night.

Kompany had warned beforehand of the challenge PSV would pose, and the match unfolded exactly as expected. “It was expected that this would be a tough match,” he said, pointing to PSV’s recent European statement results. Victories at Anfield and a dominant home win over Napoli were fresh reminders of their attacking threat. “They’re an attacking team with players that can finish their chances,” Kompany added, acknowledging the level of difficulty Bayern faced.

The Bayern coach also had words of praise for the goal his side conceded, refusing to criticise his team for a moment of quality from the opposition. “The goal we conceded was a wonderful shot, a wonderful action,” he said. What pleased him most, however, was how Bayern responded – both within the match and after recent disappointment. “I’m happy because I know how difficult these games are, and I’m also really happy about our reaction after the last defeat.”

That resilience was supported by another strong performance from Jonas Urbig, who once again stepped in with authority. Kompany was keen to highlight the bigger picture surrounding Bayern’s goalkeeping situation. “He’s obviously doing a great job in the moments where we need him and perhaps when Manuel Neuer is not able to play for us,” Kompany explained. Rather than framing it as a dilemma, the coach described it as a positive scenario for the club. “We have a really nice situation. Manu has a fantastic relationship with Jonas, he’s obviously learning his trade from one of the best goalkeepers of all time.”

Beyond the match itself, Kompany also briefly addressed an issue that continues to generate headlines: Leon Goretzka’s future. The coach confirmed that discussions are planned, but made it clear no rushed decisions would be made. “Starting tomorrow, I can look into what information is available,” Kompany said. “That’s part of the transfer window. Now it’s about what’s right for Leon, FC Bayern, and the team.”
