Kompany reveals reason for taking Neuer off in Bayern's 9-2 win over Dinamo Zagreb

After Bayern Munich’s 9-2 win over Dinamo Zagreb, Vincent Kompany explained why Manuel Neuer was taken off at half-time and reflected on the performance.

Manuel Neuer was replaced by Sven Ulreich at half-time of Bayern Munich’s historic 9-2 win over Dinamo Zagreb on Tuesday night. After the game, Vincent Kompany explained why.

“It was a precaution. We didn’t want to take any risks,” the Bayern coach told DAZN.

Leading 3-0 at the break, Bayern conceded two goals early in the second half, but regained control and ran out comfortable winners.

“I’m just happy for the lads. They scored the goals, I didn’t score any,” Kompany said, adding:

“We conceded two goals but we stayed calm. It’s not ideal. I know already what happened and how we need to work on it.

“We need to have more control but that will come.”

Kompany was also asked about the situation with Leon Goretzka, who has slipped down the pecking order since he took over.

The veteran midfielder has been left out of the squad several times under Kompany, but came on to score tonight.

“When a team wins, there are no losers. Never. And he is important for us, he will be important,” underlined Kompany.

He added that Goretzka is “popular in the team” but that he can “only field 11 players” at a time.
