Niko Kovac didn’t mince his words after Borussia Dortmund had to settle for a 3-3 draw against St. Pauli in their Bundesliga opener.
Borussia Dortmund coach Niko Kovac expressed frustration after his side’s 3-3 draw with FC St. Pauli on Saturday.
The Black and Yellows found themselves 3-1 up in the second half, only for St. Pauli to stage a late comeback and salvage a point.
“Today, we experienced exactly what I told the team: It’s going to be intense, and we have to work very hard physically to get something out of it. I think we hardly managed that over the full 90 minutes,” Kovac said at his post-match press conference.
Reacting to a disappointing first-half display, Kovac substituted Karim Adeyemi and Jobe Bellingham – and noted he could have taken “four others” off as well.
“We failed to match the opponent in terms of physicality and strength. We played too slowly and rarely exploited depth. The goals we score all come from individual quality.”
Dortmund will hope to bounce back when they face Union Berlin at home next week.
