Kylian Mbappé set for best-ever season?

Despite missing a penalty at Stade de la Meinau, the inevitable sight of Kylian Mbappé wheeling away in celebration didn’t go amiss when he was gifted an opportunity to score into an open net by Strasbourg goalkeeper Alaa Bellaarouch. The Frenchman scored PSG’s second on the night which went a long way to securing a 2-1 victory on the road for Luis Enrique’s men.

It was the France captain’s 20th Ligue 1 Uber Eats goal of the season in 19 matches played in the top flight. In the last 50 years, no player has scored 20 goals faster. Mbappé’s highest scoring season for his club was in 2021-2022 where he scored 46 goals for Les Rouge et Bleu.

A season to remember for Kylian Mbappé?

The boy from the Paris suburbs has set the bar high this season in the top flight, especially when compared to the performances of players in the same position in a given season over the last 15 years in the top five European leagues.

Mbappé has has scored 1.12 goals per 90 minutes in Ligue 1 Uber Eats this season, with 5.3 shots and 10.3 shots on target per 90 minutes. These three statistical measures place him among the very best strikers in the top five leagues over the course of a single season. His touches per 90 minutes give him a percentile of 83, which means that fewer than 20% of strikers compared have had more touches in a given season. 

Kylian Mbappé and Paris Saint-Germain will face Stade Brestois tomorrow evening (21:10 CET) in the Coupe de France, with a spot in quarterfinals on the line for both sides. Les Parisiens were knocked out at this stage of the competition last season, and havent’t won the cup since the 2020 – 2021 season under Mauricio Pochettino.
