Lacazette’s Goal Powers OL to Win Over OM

On Sunday night at the Groupama Stadium, Olympique Lyonnais secured three vital points to bolster their fight against relegation with a 1-0 victory over Olympique de Marseille.

Lyon went into the match against Marseille on the back of two consecutive losses in Ligue 1. Given their current position in a relegation battle, OL couldn’t afford to suffer a third straight defeat and needed to secure three points.

Regarding OM, they came into the game after three consecutive Ligue 1 draws. Their most recent league triumph was on December 21, 2023, in a 2-1 win against Clermont Foot. Since then, they’ve been dropping points, impacting their prospects in the race for European competition spots next season.

OL’s attack came out with an impressive first-half performance, registering eight total shots, one of which would result in a goal. Alexandre Lacazette broke the 0-0 deadlock in the 37th minute to give Lyon the lead over OM, which was all the team needed for the win.

Marseille’s offense picked up momentum in the second half. They only managed three shots in the first 45 minutes, but Gennaro Gattuso and his team stepped it up and recorded five shots in the last 45 minutes. OM couldn’t find an equalizer however, and they are now winless in four league matches.

OL’s victory propels them out of the relegation zone, into 15th place, leapfrogging FC Metz. Lyon will now turn their attention to the Coupe de France, where they’ll take on LOSC Lille in the Round of 16 at the Groupama Stadium on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, OM are gearing up to host FC Metz at the Stade Vélodrome on Friday, hoping to end their winless league streak.
