The Premier League had five teams qualify for the Champions League last season and their UEFA ranking this term has them on course for a repeat as English sides continue to dominate
The Premier League had a record six teams in the Champions League this year – that owing to an impressive coefficient rating coupled with Europa League success.
And as things stand, with England being the standout nation in this season’s tournament, we could see another six in next year’s edition as the latest rankings paint an impressive picture.
Points are awarded for wins and progression through the various UEFA tournaments. So with five English sides straight into the last 16 of the Champions League, and another in Newcastle into the play-off round, things look pretty rosy. That is before you consider the impressive strides Aston Villa are making in the Europa League.
Since the Champions League had a revamp and more teams were introduced the two best performing leagues in Europe in this current season get an extra spot, generally taking a country’s participants from four to five.
It means the desire to land fourth, a place craved by so many Premier League clubs over the years, is now a desire to finish fifth. And it looks as if that’ll be good enough for a team in England this year.

England still have all nine of their teams who entered European competition still in the hunt for the trophy. The six from the Champions League, Villa and Nottingham Forest in the Europa League are looking good for qualification whilst Crystal Palace are all but assured to make the next stage of the Europa Conference League.
So not only does that paint a good picture, but the continued involvement means English clubs can continue racking up wins and, as a result, coefficient points.
A look at this season’s performance shows just how far clear England is of its European rivals. At the time of writing Germany sit second and will get a fifth team in next season’s Champions League, but they still face some tough competition. Their ranking may depend on how deep someone like Bayern Munich goes in the tournament.
Portugal, Spain and Italy are all hot on their heels and would all relish an extra team in Europe next term. France are further back but could still have a major say, especially with Lyon and Strasbourg performing so well.
They are top of the Europa League and Europa Conference League tables respectively – should they go all the way they will bank serious points. PSG are also likely to have a say in the Champions League.
