Inter captain Lautaro Martinez has left the Argentina squad after tests showed the muscular injury was far more serious than first thought.

The striker had been expected to remain with the group with the hope of recovering in time for Wednesday’s 2026 World Cup qualifier against Brazil, even if he was forced to miss the first fixture with Uruguay.

However, it was announced this evening that Lautaro Martinez has been sent home to be reviewed by Inter medics.

The statement claims that he has been diagnosed with a muscular lesion in his lower left hamstring.

If confirmed, this would be far more serious than previously thought and put the crucial Champions League quarter-final ties against Bayern Munich at risk.

He is the second Inter striker to be sent home from international duty due to injury, as Marcus Thuram already left the France camp ahead of their Nations League quarter-finals with a knock to the ankle.
