Lazio vs Roma – Totti reveals importance of Derby clash

Roma legend Francesco Totti has described the Derby della Capitale as “a derby unlike any other”, ahead of Sunday’s match between Lazio and the Giallorossi.

It is a significant match for both teams, as Lazio look to bounce back from a shaky start to the season and Roma look for their first derby victory under new head coach Gian Piero Gasperini.

Speaking to the Corriere dello Sport, Totti said “It is a naturally difficult match to play yet naturally beautiful. And above all, Rome experiences it differently from everything else.”

“Every derby is different,” he continued, “won, lost, drawn, it is always significant. It is normal that the ones won are the ones to remember most but just being part of the match is an unforgettable feeling. Only those who are Roman understand the importance and value of this match.”

The iconic Italian legend also commented on his old club’s disappointing 1-0 loss at home to Torino last weekend.

“I think they lacked the mentality, the determination and the desire to win. Maybe they took the game a little lightly,” he said, “they thought it would be a little easier after the first two consecutive victories.”

Then, Totti was asked to single out players of importance for the two sides.

For Roma, however, the retired forward refused to name individuals: “I think the group because the individual can’t do much by himself anyway. It is the only way to turn the page, stay united, try to play a great game and with great determination.”

For Lazio, Totti identified Italian winger Mattia Zaccagni as a source of danger but argued that “I think with the formation Gasperini adopts, he will create a good cage for him.”

The Italian then looked ahead to Roma’s objectives for the season, stating “I hope Roma can finish in the top four. That is everyone’s main objective, especially the fans. They should return to the top level as it is only right that Roma deserve a competition like the Champions League.”
