Leeds United have checked on Borussia Monchengladbach captain Julian Weigl.

The 29-year old is well known by Leeds boss Daniel Farke but, ideally, the club want a younger profile ahead of a potential summer rebuild.

Promotion from the Championship will dictate who Leeds pursue but they have already earmarked the need to sign a new goalkeeper, a centre-back, left-back, midfielder, winger and striker.

Weigl is a holding midfielder who has been capped six times by Germany and was signed by Farke for Gladbach from Benfica, where he won the Primeira Liga title in 2022-23.

The lack of a top finisher and goalkeeper alternative has slowed Leeds’ drive for automatic promotion somewhat.

They are top of the Championship on goal difference ahead of Burnley but have dropped points along the way after being in strong positions.

Leeds spent £18.8m on agents’ fees between February 2024 and February 2025, more than Premier League Spurs, Everton, Wolves, Brighton and Brentford.

They have been hampered by PSR restrictions in recent windows but will be able to spend this summer with the target being a return to the top flight.

That could come soon if rivals Sheffield United continue to slip up over this coming Easter weekend.
