The results of an MRI conducted early Sunday morning confirmed that Czech attacker Adam Hlozek of Bayer 04 Leverkusen had sustained an ankle injury that would sideline him for “three to four weeks”. The 21-year-old – in the starting XI for Bayer’s 1-0 win over 1. FC Union Berlin yesterday – had to exit proceedings in the 33rd minute when ankle problems left him unable to carry on.

Hlozek – while not necessarily the most important factor in his club’s historic undefeated season – has scored seven goals and pocketed two assists for Xabi Alonso’s Werkself in 32 appearances across all competitions this year. The 31-times-capped Czech international proved especially effective for his team in the Europa League and DFB-Pokal. Five of his seven goals have come in those two competitions.

Hlozek’s replacement on Saturday, Amine Adli, can easily ensure that the soon-to-be-crowned German champions don’t miss a beat in attack. Nigerian striker Victor Boniface also nears a comeback for Germany’s red company team. Hlozek retains a slim hope of returning before the end of the league campaign in six weeks’ time and can still participate in the late May Pokal or (if the team makes it) Europa League Final.
