One year on from arguably the greatest football match ever played, Lionel Messi is celebrating the anniversary of winning the World Cup.

The Argentina captain posted to Instagram celebrating the anniversary of when he led his nation to glory over France at the 2022 World Cup Final in Qatar.

‘One year since the most beautiful craziness of my career,’ the Argentine captain wrote in Spanish for the caption.

‘Unforgettable memories that will last a lifetime. Happy Anniversary to all!!!’

The pictures included scenes from Argentina’s celebrations both at the stadium, outside the stadium, in the locker room, and back in the home country.

It was a year ago today that the Argentina team of Lionel Scaloni and Lionel Messi conquered the French team led by Didier Deschamps and Kylian Mbappe.

Rarely ever do we see two of the best in the world face off in the final of a World Cup, but this was such an occasion – with one hoping to taste the glory of winning the trophy for the first time and the other looking to get a second helping.

Argentina took an early lead when Angel Di Maria was cut down in the penalty area by Ousmane Dembele – with Messi converting the spot kick to go up 1-0.

Just 13 minutes later, Di Maria managed a goal of his own after some brilliant build up play.

Julian Alvarez found Alexis Mac Allister streaking down the right flank before the now-Liverpool midfielder sent a perfectly slotted goal across for Di Maria to bury.

France prodded and prodded but could not find themselves a goal until Randal Kolo Muani was brought down by Nicolas Otamendi in the box for a penalty in the 80th minute.

Mbappe managed an equalizer two minutes later – volleying a great pass from Marcus Thuram as he was falling to the ground into the bottom right corner to make things 2-2.

90 minutes was not enough to decide a winner – so the game went to extra time.

There, Messi would strike again cleaning up a rebound off Hugo Lloris that went just over the line giving Argentina a 3-2 lead.

La Albiceleste was just five minutes away from a victory in extra time when fullback Gonzalo Montiel committed a handball in the box. Mbappe stepped up again and converted it – becoming the second person ever to score a hat trick in a World Cup final.

Off to penalties the match went. Mbappe and Messi each finished their spot kicks with ease.

Kingsley Coman hit a well struck penalty that Argentina keeper Emiliano Martinez read perfectly and saved. Paulo Dybala scored to put the Argentines up 2-1.

Things got worse for France when midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni completely missed his shot to the right of Martinez.

Leandro Paredes converted next before Kolo Muani buried his down the middle to stay alive.

With victory on his laces, Gonzalo Montiel stepped up, sent Lloris the wrong way and converted his chance to give Argentina a third World Cup title.

Back at home, celebrations raged and the streets of Buenos Aires were filled with a throng of jubilant humanity.

Days later, the team arrived back at home and were treated to a heroes welcome befitting their triumph.
