Liverpool and Everton release a statement ahead of Merseyside derby amid Storm Darragh after Wayne Rooney’s Plymouth saw their game called off

Liverpool and Everton have issued a joint statement ahead of Saturday’s Merseyside derby amid concerns over Storm Darragh.

The Met Office has issued an amber warning for Merseyside on Saturday, with strong winds expected. 

Liverpool are top of the Premier League following a superb start to the season under Arne Slot, while Everton are currently 15th in the table.

The match is set to be the final Premier League Merseyside derby to be held at Goodison Park. 

Matches in Wales have already been called off amid concerns over Storm Darragh, while a Championship match between Wayne Rooney‘s Plymouth and Oxford United has already been postponed.

Everton and Liverpool have addressed concerns their lunchtime kick-off could also be at risk. 

The statement from both teams confirmed that the game between Everton and Liverpool is still set to go ahead.

However, those attending have been urged to allow extra time for travelling to the game.

A statement from Liverpool and Everton on Friday afternoon read: ‘Supporters attending Saturday’s derby at Goodison Park are advised to allow extra time for travel, and to remain alert to Met Office weather warnings.

‘An Amber severe wind warning has been issued by the Met Office for Merseyside from 1am on Saturday morning, with wind gusts of 60mph to 70mph likely.

‘That warning for wind is expected to remain in place until 6am on Sunday. 

‘Given the weather warning, fans are advised to allow extra time for their journey and to take extra care.

‘Fans are also advised to keep a close eye on travel and weather guidance in their area to assist with travel planning for Saturday’s Premier League fixture (12.30pm GMT kick-off).’

A spokesman for Merseyside Police said: ‘We are advising members of the public to stay safe, plan ahead and avoid any non-essential travel until conditions have improved.

‘Residents are advised to check the relevant local authority pages for details.

‘If you need to make an essential journey during the storm, please plan ahead and drive carefully. Remember to give vulnerable road users including cyclists, motorcyclists and pedestrians more room than usual. 

‘They are more likely to be blown around by side winds – always keep a safe distance. Those using public transport are advised to check for any disruption before they travel.’

Everton won the corresponding fixture last season as they beat Liverpool 2-0 courtesy of goals from Jarrad Branthwaite and Dominic Calvert-Lewin.
