Former Liverpool midfielder is set for a shock loan move to Hungary, according to German media.

The Guinea international has endured a torrid few years. He left RB Leipzig for Liverpool in 2018 for a whopping €60 million but never properly found his feet at Anfield.

Injury problems ruined any possible momentum for the midfielder and he ultimately departed as a major disappointment on a free transfer in the summer of 2023.

He made a surprising return to the Bundesliga, joining Werder Bremen in a move that was a massive gamble on the part of the club due to his sizeable wages and fitness issues. The gamble did not pay off.

Exiled Keita to leave Bremen

Last season, injuries restricted Keita to just a handful of appearances before his own actions effectively ended his Bremen career. Prior to a game against Bayer Leverkusen in the spring, the 29-year-old allegedly went AWOL after being informed that he would not start the match.

He was subsequently suspended and handed a club-record fine. Despite protesting his innocence, Keita was permanently banished from the first-team. However, Bremen were reluctant to terminate his contract due to the massive compensation the player would have been entitled to.

Instead, the club tried to engineer a summer move to Turkey, but the deal fell through at the 11th hour, leaving Keita stuck in limbo. Now, however, BILD and Sky Germany report that a solution appears to have been found.

It is claimed that Keita and Bremen are in advanced negotiations with Hungarian giants Ferencvaros over an initial one-year loan in what would be a very surprising move. Should he return to Bremen in January 2026, he would only have six months remaining on his deal.

Reporter Florian Plettenberg asserts that the transfer could be ‘finalised within the next 2-3 days,’ though the last details as well as a medical still need to be sorted.

Ferencvaros, coached by London-born Dutchman Pascal Jansen, are currently second in the Hungarian top flight and 11th in the Europa League.
