Liverpool get fresh Trent Alexander-Arnold injury update for Real Madrid clash

Real Madrid’s Trent Alexander-Arnold has been out for a month, but the right-back is back in training and could yet be fit to face Liverpool in the Champions League at Anfield

Xabi Alonso does not believe Trent Alexander-Arnold will recover from injury in time for Real Madrid‘s Champions League clash with Juventus on Wednesday. The former Liverpool vice-captain has returned to training ahead of the fixture, but has been absent for their previous six matches following a hamstring injury.

Speaking at Tuesday’s pre-match press conference, Alonso confirmed he would provide the media with a final fitness update on Saturday. That comes the day before they take on Barcelona in El Clasico.

Real Madrid meet the Reds at Anfield in a fortnight, a fixture touted as Alexander-Arnold’s homecoming to his boyhood club.

The blow picked up during their encounter with Marseille in mid-September cast doubt over his participation, but the England international appears set to be available for selection.

“We’re going to take it day by day,” Alonso said. “Trent and [Dani] Carvajal have done some work. Looking ahead to tomorrow, I don’t think they’ll be ready.”

Alexander-Arnold missing out against Juventus means he has a maximum of two fixtures to make his comeback before Madrid travel to Liverpool.

The first match is on Sunday against Barcelona, with the second scheduled for a week on Saturday when they face Valencia.

He has managed just five outings for Madrid, three lasting fewer than 10 minutes.

The right-back featured from the start in only half of his new club’s opening four league matches of the campaign, with Carvajal getting the nod for the remaining two.

Alexander-Arnold made just five appearances off the bench in the Premier League last season.

He managed to feature in 49 matches across all competitions, even with ankle and hamstring injuries affecting his final campaign at Anfield.
