Liverpool have received a positive update as they seek to complete a deal for Eintracht Frankfurt forward Hugo Ekitike.

Arne Slot’s side are ready to continue their big-spending summer by sanctioning a mega-move for the France international forward, who has been rated at €100 million by his club.

Naturally, the Anfield side are trying to drive this price down closer to Ekitike’s Estimated Transfer Value (ETV) of €71m.

Sky Sports reports that the Reds are making progress on a deal worth a total of €86.5m, including bonuses. An agreement isn’t thought to be particularly close at this point, Mark McAdam says.

The really exciting news for Liverpool supporters, though, is that Ekitike’s arrival is seen as a signing that the club can make regardless of any outgoings. In other words, it does not hinge on Slot’s side being able to sell Darwin Nunez, who nevertheless looks primed for a move to the Saudi Pro League after a switch to Napoli broke down.

It also suggests that if the Premier League champions miss out on Ekitike, they can look at other options for the No.9 role.

Newcastle hit Isak snag after Liverpool interest

Alexander Isak had been their top option, but a deal for the Sweden star looks a distant prospect. Newcastle United appear unwilling to allow their best player to move to a Premier League rival.

On the other hand, Newcastle have given Isak the green light to hold contract discussions with Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal in a shock twist.

The Athletic reports that the Magpies are at the top of their wage budget and cannot afford to give the striker the type of wage increase he feels he merits.

With Newcastle’s Saudi owners also holding a controlling stake in Al-Hilal, Liverpool will be wary of their rivals finding a loophole to give Isak the type of money he wants and keep him at St James’ Park.

For their part, the Reds appear to have settled on Ekitike as their striker of choice for the moment.
