Liverpool are discussing the possibility of re-signing Jarell Quansah just a year after selling him to Bayer Leverkusen, according to a report.
The homegrown defender was one of the revelations of Jurgen Klopp’s final season at Anfield, but he found life under new head coach Arne Slot difficult. The Dutchman never seemed to warm to Quansah.
Slot substituted the 23-year-old at half-time in his first game in charge against Ipswich and then proceeded to publicly criticise the young defender’s performance. From that point onwards, the England hopeful only sporadically featured in 2024/25.
In the summer, it was clear that something had to change. Liverpool granted him his wish of securing regular game time by selling him to Bundesliga side Bayer Leverkusen for a respectable €35 million.
However, they retained their faith in the player and wanted to maintain some form of control over his future. Accordingly, they inserted a buy-back clause set at a sizeable €60m for 2027.
Liverpool to bring Quansah back?
Despite the clause not being active this summer, Liverpool are actively mulling over bringing Quansah back after just one season, TEAMtalk claims. Discussions over a potential move are already taking place.
Although Leverkusen have endured a difficult season, the blame can’t be pinned on Quansah. He has done the best he could, even if he hasn’t always been flawless, and Thomas Tuchel rewarded him with his senior England debut in November.
The centre-back has also been a threat offensively. He has scored four times this term, with two of his goals coming in his last two Bundesliga outings. He salvaged a late draw against Mainz with a striker’s finish at the weekend.
Liverpool are currently deliberating what to do about their defensive department after this season. The threat of losing Ibrahima Konate on a free transfer remains, while Virgil van Dijk turns 35 in the summer.
Jeremy Jacquet has been signed, and Giovanni Leoni will return from his ACL injury, but Liverpool could look to add another defender just to be safe. This is where Quansah comes into play.
If the 23-year-old were to show an interest in returning to Anfield, Leverkusen would reluctantly allow Liverpool to re-sign him for a fee in that €60m ballpark of his 2027 clause, the report asserts. The Reds want to bring Quansah back even if Konate signs a contract extension.
