Liverpool head coach Arne Slot is set for his first reinforcement of the summer transfer window, with a deal to sign Jeremie Frimpong from Bayer Leverkusen said to be advancing smoothly.

The Reds were rocked by the announcement of Trent Alexander-Arnold that he will leave the club at the end of his contract in June. The England right-back is poised to join Real Madrid in a high-profile free agency signing, the type of which took Kylian Mbappe to the Bernabeu last summer.

Slot has wasted no time in finding a replacement for Alexander-Arnold, with the Liverpool boss set to break his own personal transfer record to snap up Frimpong from Leverkusen.

Reports from Germany indicate that a deal, which will be worth in the region of €35 million, is coming close to fruition.

Sky Sport Deutschland’s Florian Plettenberg has revealed on X: “Jeremie Frimpong and Liverpool are on the verge of reaching a verbal agreement. Talks are progressing, with additional details still being clarified.

“Frimpong is ready for the move to Liverpool – also because Arne Slot is very keen to sign him.

“It’s looking good, but the deal is not done yet. Release clause set at around €35–40m.”

Romano: Frimpong contract almost agreed

Plettenberg’s information echoes that of Fabrizio Romano.

The football transfer news reporter tweeted on Wednesday: “Understand talks between Liverpool and Jeremie Frimpong’s camp over personal terms have advanced again today.

“Player’s always been keen on the move and Liverpool are progressing on salary, length of contract, every detail of the agreement.

“Deal close.”

Like Alexander-Arnold, Frimpong is a primarily attack-minded presence from the right-back area and has more typically been used as a wing-back for Bayer Leverkusen this season.

Across all competitions, he has five goals and 12 assists across 48 appearances, while his Estimated Transfer Value (ETV) is €55m – well below the price Liverpool will pay for him.
