Bayer Leverkusen boss Xabi Alonso was previously considered to be the favourite to succeed Klopp at Anfield, but the former Liverpool midfielder opted to commit his future to the newly-crowned Bundesliga champions instead.

Sporting CP’s Ruben Amorim and Lille’s Paulo Fonseca were also under consideration, however Liverpool have opted for Slot instead.

Last season, the 45-year-old led Feyenoord to their first Eredivisie title in 20 years, while they are currently second in the Dutch top flight this time around.

On Thursday, before Feyenoord’s win over Go Ahead Eagles, Slot confirmed that he would like to replace Klopp at Anfield. He told ESPN: “It seems clear to me that I would like to go to Liverpool. Now I’m waiting to see whether the clubs reach an agreement. I’m very confident in that.”

An agreement has been reached, with Slot expected to take charge of Liverpool when Klopp steps down at the end of the current campaign.

What has Jurgen Klopp said about Arne Slot?

Ahead of Liverpool’s Premier League clash against West Ham United on Saturday, Klopp was questioned about Slot and whether he believes the Feyenoord boss would be a suitable choice as the next Reds manager.

“What I like a lot about it is if he is the one then he wants to take the job – he’s desperate, excited, let’s go for it,” he said.

“I like the way his team play football and all the things I hear about him as a guy. Some people I know, know him, I don’t know him yet. Good coach, good guy.

“If he’s the solution for the club then I am more than happy. It’s not up to me to judge but it all sounds really good to me.”

Liverpool are currently third in the Premier League table, three points behind league leaders Arsenal.
