Liverpool could return for Inter superstar Denzel Dumfries in the summer, according to Italian media.
The Netherlands international has returned to action for the Nerazzurri after several months on the sidelines. Dumfries has been a hugely important player for Inter in recent years, and he was sorely missed during his absence.
Although Inter managed to entrench themselves at the summit of Serie A, their Champions League form fell off a cliff without the 29-year-old, only winning one of the six games since his injury in November.
He returned for a few minutes in the second playoff leg against Bodo/Glimt midweek but could not prevent his club’s humiliating exit to the Norwegian minnows.
Interestingly, Dumfries attracted attention during the January transfer window, despite not playing. When compatriot Jeremie Frimpong suffered an injury, Liverpool held talks with Inter over a potential deal for the wing-back.
Liverpool to return for Dumfries
These talks did not progress, but Dumfries will be one to watch again in the summer. Due to a release clause that is active in July, the Dutchman will be available for just €25 million.
Although the defender turns 30 in April, this is a good fee for a player of his quality. In fact, it is a bit of a bargain. His Estimated Transfer Value (ETV) currently stands at €31m, down from a pre-injury peak of €38.7m.
According to Tuttomercatoweb, Liverpool are “still interested in him” and could return for him after this season. With Conor Bradley having suffered a long-term knee injury in January and Jeremie Frimpong repeatedly dealing with minor issues, Dumfries could be a smart pick-up to provide depth and quality.
In recent weeks, transfer insider Fabrizio Romano has similarly teased that Dumfries could be on the move this summer. He will only have two years left on his Inter contract after the season and is sure to be courted by numerous clubs, not just Liverpool.
