Celtic are set to be major beneficiaries of Trent Alexander-Arnold’s decision to move to Real Madrid at the end of the season, with Liverpool set to send them millions as they look to replace the England right-back.

While Brendan Rodgers’ side have had some success sending players to the Premier League in recent years, including Liverpool’s own Virgil van Dijk, any money Celtic receive from the Reds in this case will come about in an indirect fashion.

Liverpool are tracking Bayer Leverkusen star Jeremie Frimpong as a long-term successor to Alexander-Arnold, and this could have a major spin-off benefit to the Hoops.

Frimpong is a former Celtic player, and while the Parkhead club only made €11 million from his initial sale to the Bundesliga giants, they retained a strong sell-on clause for the player, reckoned to be worth 30% of any future transfer fee by the Daily Record.

The 24-year-old is also wanted to Manchester City, according to TeamTalk, with a transfer being touted around the €48m mark.

If Liverpool were to sign Frimpong for this figure, that would send Celtic a windfall payment of €16m during the summer.

This could also be seen as something of a bargain given that Frimpong has an Estimated Transfer Value (ETV) of €56.2m.

Liverpool set to land Trent fee

Liverpool may yet land some compensation from Real Madrid for Alexander-Arnold, which could help fund a deal for Frimpong.

A third transfer window has been opened prior to the Club World Cup, which could allow Los Blancos to rush through a transfer that would likely be completed for a nominal fee.

“If they want him to play in the group stage of the Club World Cup, they are going to have to negotiate with Liverpool and come to some arrangement for him to be released early from his contract,” Kaveh Solhekol of Sky Sports reports.

“Real Madrid could say ‘we’re going to wait until July, we don’t need him for the group stage’.

“But Alexander-Arnold hasn’t told Liverpool he wants to leave, Real Madrid haven’t told Liverpool they have come to an agreement to sign him when his contract runs out.”

All this does not stop the fact that Liverpool will need to replace the England star and that Celtic are set to land a major payday from the Frimpong deal.
