Liverpool may be on course to win the Premier League title but one of their players might not be receiving a winners’ medal if they do.

It was a huge weekend for Arne Slot‘s team, who beat Manchester City 2-0 at the Etihad after Arsenal suffered a shock 1-0 defeat to West Ham at the Emirates.

The results mean Liverpool now hold an 11 point lead at the top of the table with 11 games to play, though the Gunners do have a game in hand.

No team has ever failed to lift the trophy holding such a substantial lead at this stage of the season and it’s hard to imagine some of their stars have not already had thoughts about the celebrations.

However, one member of the squad has is now left in a precarious position.

Italian winger Federico Chiesa joined the club from Juventus in a £12.5million deal last summer but has made very little impact since his arrival.

Chiesa, who has struggled with fitness issues, has made 10 appearances in all competitions with only three of those coming in the top flight.

And he will have to feature in two more Premier League matches if he is to automatically receive a winners’ medal.

The Premier League rules on medals state: ‘The champions are given 40 commemorative medals made of silver.

‘They can be distributed to the manager, players and officials, as the club see fit, as long as every player who has made at least five Premier League appearances during the title-winning season gets one.

‘Additional medals may only be presented with the consent of the Premier League Board, and that will only be granted if more than 39 players have made at least five PL appearances during the campaign.’

Chiesa is not alone in this situation with the likes of Jayden Danns and Vitezslav Jaros having made one Premier League appearance this term while Trey Nyoni, Tyler Morton and James McConnell are still waiting for their first slice of action.
