Liverpool target teases January transfer after leaving PSG ‘furious’

Rayan Cherki has spoken about his future ahead of his anticipated departure from Olympique Lyon.

The French youth international is one of the players expected to be sacrificed as Lyon seek to raise funds to stave off their provisional relegation to Ligue 2.

Les Gones are enjoying a solid campaign given the circumstances but could end the season demoted to the second tier unless they manage to ease their €500 million debt burden.

Cherki was already expected to get sold in the summer as he only had a year left to run on his contract but no transfer ultimately materialised, which prompted Lyon to extend the homegrown’s deal by a year.

After a disappointing season, Cherki is a man back in form this term and this has attracted the attention of clubs around Europe, who are well aware of the Ligue 1 side’s financial predicament.

Ahead of Lyon’s clash with PSG this weekend, L’Equipe has shed light on Cherki’s summer saga with the Parisians. The outlet reports that the French champions had a deal for the 21-year-old all but wrapped up but an about-face from the player left them furious.

Cherki pumped the breaks on talks with PSG when Borussia Dortmund came calling but a concrete offer from BVB never materialised while preliminary negotiations with RB Leipzig also came to nothing.

PSG, it is claimed, have not forgiven the versatile attacker and will not rekindle their interest in January, which is good news for Liverpool, who have recently been named among his suitors.

And Cherki himself is not sure whether he will see out the remainder of the campaign as a Lyon player. “For now, there are two matches left [until the winter break]. We’ll see if I’m still here come the end of the season,” he told Canal Plus.
