Liverpool have been told that Federico Chiesa is ready to push for a move back to Juventus during the January transfer window.

While the Reds have intimated that they want to retain the Italy international forward until the summer at least, Chiesa appears to have other ideas about his future.

The 28-year-old is ready to try to force a move to Juventus, with La Repubblica indicating that Liverpool are ready to make a decision within hours.

Preparations in Turin have already been made. Head coach Luciano Spalletti has given the green light to go ahead, with Juventus ready to propose a loan deal that will run until the end of the season.

Liverpool, meanwhile, are only willing to make a permanent sale and could install a buy option in the contract that would turn into an obligation.

Chiesa to Juventus: Romano announced ‘formal contact’

Fabrizio Romano has previously reported that Juventus have made formal contact for the player, who has struggled to make an impact under Arne Slot, despite being the Dutchman’s only signing in the summer of 2024 when he took over from Jurgen Klopp.

Romano tweeted: “Juventus made formal contact to show interest in Federico Chiesa over possible return in January.

“Juve are looking to add a winger this month and Chiesa is appreciated. Decision up to Liverpool and the player, still early stages.”

It now appears that the deal has advanced, although it is still unclear what the terms of the agreement might be.

Why Liverpool could sell

Liverpool bought Chiesa at a bargain €12 million price but he made only 14 appearances last season, scoring two goals in the process. Although he has featured more regularly this term, he has primarily been a substitute in Slot’s thinking, making only three starts, two of which came in the Carabao Cup.

With the Reds needing to make sales to free up additional spots for non-homegrown foreign players in their Champions League squad, it may be that they perform a U-turn and sell a player who has been little more than a bit-part figure.
