Liverpool have been told that they need to put “big money” on the table if they want to sign Leeds United defender Jaka Bijol.

The Slovenia international joined the Elland Road club in the summer from Udinese. Bijol cost Leeds just €18 million in what increasingly looks like a really shrewd piece of business.

It took a while for Bijol to get up to speed and to start playing, but since coming into the team in October, he has been almost ever-present in Daniel Farke’s side when fully fit. As a result of his performances, the 27-year-old was recently linked with a shock move to Liverpool.

The Reds have already signed Jeremy Jacquet for the summer, but with Virgil van Dijk not getting any younger and Ibrahima Konate still not having signed a new contract, it is possible that another centre-back is recruited.

Bijol is said to be one of the options under consideration. However, with a contract until 2030, Leeds appear to be in a strong negotiating position, especially if they manage to stay up. They remain six points clear of the relegation zone thanks to Liverpool, who beat West Ham on Saturday.

Liverpool must pay big money for Bijol

According to journalist Pete O’Rourke, it would require “big money” to make Leeds consider parting with Bijol, whom he described as a “monster” defender. “He is a monster at centre-back, loves the physical side of the game, very good in the aerial challenges as well,” O’Rourke explained.

“I think Leeds right now, if they stay up, which is looking positive for them, they’ll be keen to keep hold of their best players and build on what they have achieved this season.

“Bijol was a bit of a snip at £15m from Udinese. It would take big money to even consider Leeds letting him move on anytime soon.”

As a result, it looks doubtful that Liverpool will sign the 69-cap Slovenia international this summer. They will likely also be targeting younger options. Last year’s signing, Giovanni Leoni, was 18 when he joined, while the aforementioned Jacquet is 20, illustrating Liverpool’s focus on younger players.
