Joachim Löw revisits the time he had to drop Thomas Müller from the national team in an interview with Süddeutsche Zeitung. The former Bundestrainer described the situation as “unfortunate”.
Löw decided not to call the Bayern faithful after Germany’s group stage elimination in the 2018 World Cup. The 65-year-old now looks back at the decision as a “well-intentioned” approach, but he admits his mistake.
“When Thomas was in the dressing room, the temperature changed,” said Löw about one of the stars of Germany’s 2014 World Cup triumph. “Thomas was one of those irreplaceable players who are so important for a dressing room.”
Löw also discussed his loud character that could be too much at times. “There were also a few situations during training when I said: ‘Thomas, please be quiet! You don’t have to comment on everything.”
Müller is expected to play this summer’s Club World Cup before deciding on his future. While some speculate on the choice of ending his football career, Löw believes this will not be the closing chapter of his exemplary career. “I’m sure we’ll see him again in football.”
