Two months into his tenure as head coach of Real Madrid, former club defender Álvaro Arbeloa says the experience has already been transformative-even if he insists he remains fundamentally the same person.
Speaking to reporters at the press room of Ciudad Real Madrid ahead of a high-profile clash with Manchester City at the Santiago Bernabéu, Arbeloa described the first weeks of his coaching tenure as an intense learning process.

Arbeloa acknowledged that managing one of the world’s most demanding clubs has accelerated his development as a coach. While he rejected the idea that he has personally changed since taking over the position, he admitted that the experience has been comparable to completing an advanced course in leadership and tactics.
“It feels like a master’s degree”
“There’s no difference,” Arbeloa said when asked how he has evolved since becoming the team’s head coach. “In these two months, you grow and gain more experience with many of the things happening to us. I’m the same person, but with two months as a Real Madrid coach, which is like a master’s degree. Every day here is not only a tremendous joy but also a huge learning experience.”
The former Spain international now faces one of his biggest early tests on the sideline when Real Madrid hosts Manchester City in the knockout stage of the UEFA Champions League. Arbeloa made it clear that he expects a difficult matchup against one of the most tactically sophisticated teams in Europe.
According to the Madrid coach, City’s strength lies not only in its individual talent but also in the cohesion developed under manager Pep Guardiola over several seasons. Arbeloa noted that Guardiola’s players understand the system so well that they can operate almost instinctively on the field.
The mindset remains unchanged
Despite the challenge, Arbeloa emphasized that Real Madrid’s mindset remains unchanged regardless of the opponent. The Spanish club has built its reputation on success in European competition, and the new coach insisted that the team will approach the match with confidence.
The matchup also represents Arbeloa‘s first opportunity to face Guardiola as a head coach. The Real Madrid manager said he expects the Manchester City coach to introduce tactical adjustments for the game, something Guardiola has been known to do in major European matches.
For Arbeloa, the occasion carries personal significance as well. Nights at the Bernabéu during the Champions League have historically been among the club’s most memorable moments, and he admitted that the atmosphere will serve as motivation for both the players and the coaching staff.
