Liverpool spent big on four central midfielders last summer as Jurgen Klop oversaw a revamp in the middle of the park.
Jordan Henderson, Fabinho, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, James Milner and Naby Keita all departed Anfield and the Reds signed four new players to replace them.
They secured a memorable Carabao Cup trophy in February and have enjoyed a successful campaign in Klopp’s final season at the club.
Below, FootballTransfers grades Liverpool’s 2023 summer signings.
Dominik Szoboszlai (€70m from RB Leipzig): Grade – B
Dominik Szoboszlai started the season in fantastic form and many Liverpool fans were extremely positive about his arrival.
However, the Hungarian has struggled in 2024. He’s still been a good addition to the Reds’ midfield crop, but he is yet to live up to his eye-watering €70m price tag.
Alexis Mac Allister (€42m from Brighton): Grade – A
What a signing. Alexis Mac Allister was a superb footballer at Brighton, but he does seem to have taken a step forward under Klopp.
The Argentina international has played in a No.6 role for the majority of the campaign, while his performances as a No.8 have arguably been even better.
Mac Allister has popped up with some huge goals this season and many of them have been absolute screamers. Comparisons with Steven Gerrard are a little over the top, but the 25-year-old has been an outstanding signing.
Ryan Gravenberch (€40m from Bayern Munich): Grade – D
Ryan Gravenberch looked a shadow of his Ajax self at Bayern Munich and the same can be said about his time at Liverpool thus far.
The Dutchman arrived for a whopping €40m and the Reds are yet to see much reward on their investment. He isn’t a regular starter, amassing only 11 Premier League starts this year, and while he is only 21 years old, Gravenberch is yet to display the consistent quality needed to usurp a player like Curtis Jones.
Wataru Endo (€20m from Stuttgart): Grade – B
Wataru Endo hasn’t ripped up any trees at Liverpool, however he has been a consistent performer in midfield and while the Reds may look to sign an upgrade this summer, he has been a successful signing.
He may have earned a C if his transfer fee was larger, but the Japan international has been a solid signing at just €20m.
