Ruben Loftus-Cheek praised AC Milan for staying ‘mentally strong’ after the former Chelsea midfielder scored his first goal for the Italian giants in their 3-1 win over Cagliari on Thursday evening.

Loftus-Cheek joined Milan in the summer transfer window after being at Chelsea since he was a youth player, joining the side for £15million from the Blues.

He was yet to net for the side for Stefano Pioli’s side but scored a fine goal as he and his new team-mates kept tabs with rivals Inter Milan at the top of the Serie A table, who they trail by one point.

Both Milan have started the season well, while Inter boast an unbeaten record with Milan losing 5-1 to their rivals earlier this month.

Speaking after the game on DAZN, Loftus-Cheek explained his relief at opening his goals account at Milan: ‘I’m very happy. Of course, the three points are very important, it was a difficult game, we knew they’d come out fast, they got the first goal, but we stuck together and stayed strong mentally.

‘We said before the game that it was very important for us to get the first goal, but then unfortunately they scored. This is why I am proud of the team for sticking together.

It was an ex-Chelsea link-up for the goal, which was the third of Milan’s victory, with Christin Pulisic, who also moved to Italy from the Blues in the summer, setting up the midfielder.

Latching onto a ball over the top on the left, Pulisic, who left Chelsea for £20million after four years at the club, saw an initial cross blocked at Cagliari players scrambled to get back.

After looking up, he picked out Loftus-Cheek, who played 90 minutes in the match as part of Milan’s midfield three, picking up a booking.

The 27-year-old let fly from 30 yards, the ball finishing up in the bottom-left corner of the goal, before he wheeled off in celebration, followed by his team-mates.

Another ex-Chelsea man, Fiyako Tomori, also netted, scoring his side’s second goal of their 3-1 win over Cagliari

Also on the score sheet in the game was another ex-Chelsea man in Fiyako Tomori, who poked in from close range just before half time.

After a well-worked corner from Milan, a low ball arrived in the box, which was filled with a cluster of players but made its way through to the central defender to poke in.

And Milan didn’t look back, scoring the third in the second period to put the game to bed with Noah Okafor also on the scoresheet, minutes before Tomori’s goal.

Cagliari had led in the game through Zito Luvumbo, but lost again and remain winless and bottom of the Serie A table.
