Major update on Mohamed Salah’s Liverpool future issued in Egyptian media report – with a link to Trent Alexander-Arnold’s Real Madrid move

Major update on Mohamed Salah’s Liverpool future issued in Egyptian media report – with a link to Trent Alexander-Arnold’s Real Madrid move

Mohamed Salah could be closer than ever to tying down his Liverpool future as he has entered into serious contract renewal talks, according to a major Egyptian outlet.

The Liverpool star is said to have received a more compelling offer than previously by a source inside the Liverpool camp.

Salah’s deal expires at the end of the season and throughout the season he has hinted that he is closer to leaving than staying – or, in his words, ‘more out than in’.

‘Liverpool’s management has opened negotiations with Rami Abbas, Mohamed Salah’s agent, to renew the Egyptian star’s contract with Liverpool for the time being,’ a source told Masrawy.

‘Negotiations between Liverpool and Rami Abbas, Salah’s agent, are much more advanced this time than ever before, and the offer presented is higher than any offer made to the player before.’

However, the report also added a bombshell line concerning Trent Alexander-Arnold

The ‘imminent exit’ of Trent Alexander-Arnold is said to have freed up funds to pay Salah more

‘Arnold’s imminent departure from Liverpool will be a major factor in Salah’s contract renewal, following the reduction of the club’s high salaries, allowing the Egyptian star to be given what he desires in his new contract with the Reds,’ the source says.

The reference to Alexander-Arnold’s ‘imminent departure’ will ring alarm bells for Reds fans, who discovered on Tuesday that Real Madrid remain confident of signing him.

Mail Sport reported in December that the champions of Europe were certain Alexander-Arnold would be their man and were planning for life with the England international in their team.

That confidence has only intensified since then, although sources close to Liverpool suggest that they have had no indication yet that any deal has been completed.

Real Madrid have been legally permitted to talk to Alexander-Arnold since January 1 — and have been doing so — as his contract at Anfield expires in June. The Spanish giants made a direct approach to Liverpool on New Year’s Eve to sign him in January but it was swiftly rebuffed.

The Premier League leaders saw no sense in cashing in on their right back in January – Madrid were willing to pay around £20million to get him early – as they were still competing in four competitions at that time. That decision has been vindicated.

Mail Sport understands those in the Spanish capital have long expected Alexander-Arnold to join but Florentino Perez was keen to respect Liverpool so did not want to make any news public.

But sources in Madrid believe completing a move is a matter of a formality at this stage.

Such news has seen a furious response from some Liverpool fans, with one even burning a Salah shirt in a viral video.

A clip emerged on X which showed a supporter burning the back of an Alexander-Arnold shirt and proudly holding it up to the camera.

There was certainly no going back on the decision for the Reds supporter after the fire created a large hole in the back of the jersey.

In reaction to the news, many fans took to social media to express their outrage and claimed that Arne Slot should now freeze Alexander-Arnold out for the remainder of 2024-25.

One said: ‘Personally I’d be dropping Trent for the rest of the season. Don’t let him be part of the end of the season. Don’t let him say his goodbyes.

‘Don’t even have him on the bench. Don’t let him be part of the title celebrations or parade. Let him watch the team from home.’

Another fuming supporter agreed and added: ‘Don’t let him play another game. Don’t even let him in Anfield when we lift the title.’

An extra fan chimed in with: ‘Bench Trent for the rest of the season,’ with a further supporter saying: ‘Does Trent start in the rest of the 9 games? I know he is injured but will he ever play for LFC again? I don’t think so.’

Alexander-Arnold’s potential departure is a significant blow to Liverpool as not only has he risen through the ranks, but he is viewed as one of the best full backs in the world.

After joining their academy at the age of six, the defender made his debut as an 18-year-old in an EFL Cup tie against Tottenham in 2018.

He has since gone onto rack up 349 appearances and has been a cornerstone in Liverpool’s immense success over recent years.

Across his time at Anfield, Alexander-Arnold has scored 22 goals and registered 87 assists.

The defender – who has won eight trophies with his boyhood club – was also appointed as vice-captain in the summer of 2023.
