Man City announce pre-season friendly against Palermo – Football Italia

Premier League giants Manchester City have announced that they will be heading to Sicily to take on Serie B outfit Palermo in a pre-season friendly later this summer.

Man City to face Palermo on Sicily

Pep Guardiola’s side will take on Pippo Inzaghi’s men at the Stadio Renzo Barbera on Saturday, August 9, two weeks before the start of the Serie A and Serie B seasons, and one week ahead of the first Premier League match of the season.

The fixture is being dubbed the Anglo-Palermitan Trophy.

Both Manchester City and Palermo are under the same ownership group, and are both members of the City Football Group. Palermo became the group’s 11th member in 2022, adding to a partnership that also includes New York City FC, Melbourne City, Girona and Yokohama F. Marinos.

The Palermo-Man City fixture is part of Palermo’s 125th anniversary celebrations taking place this year.

“The Anglo Palermitan Trophy commemorates the Sicilian club’s maiden fixture against a team of British sailors in 1900,” Man City wrote in a statement.

Pippo Inzaghi appointed head coach of Palermo.

City Football Group technical director Riccardo Bigon added: “From a technical perspective, this game offers an important opportunity for players to continue their pre-season preparations, for both managers to implement their ideas and for the respective squads to gel together on the pitch.

“However, this match also carries the cultural significance of two monumental clubs facing each other for the first time in history, with a nod to Palermo’s heritage and English roots. This is a match-up that both sets of fanbases can be excited about watching.”
