Manchester City have taken the first steps in a move for Brighton and Hove Albion’s breakout star, who could be the club’s Bernardo Silva replacement.

Diego Gomez is the subject of the Cityzens’ interest, according to Paraguayan journalist Erwin Velazquez.

Gomez is capable of playing anywhere in midfield and on the wing, which could make him a natural fit to replace the versatile Portuguese midfielder. Gomez played in a more central role in his one-and-a-half seasons at Lionel Messi’s Inter Miami, but since joining Brighton for €13 million in January 2025, he has played on the wings most often.

The Paraguay international’s versatility is likely what caught the Manchester club’s eye, along with the 22-year-old’s flashes of brilliance this season.

Gomez’s quick adjustment key to fast rise

Gomez is in the midst of his highest-scoring season as a professional, having scored 10 goals in 30 matches in all competitions, including two in his last two Premier League appearances.

He made headlines in September 2025 with four goals in 75 minutes against Barnsley in the League Cup. A little over a month later, he scored a brace against Leeds Utd in the Premier League, which earned him a consistent place in the first XI.

He only scored once in his first half-season in England, but has kicked on in the 2025/26 campaign. The Paraguayan is finally showing the form he reached in MLS when he had six goals and six assists in 28 matches in all competitions during the 2024 season.

Gomez has an Estimated Transfer Value of just €2m, but his current club will want to at least recoup what they paid for the player, who has since become a key part of Fabian Hurzeler’s team.

With Silva looking set to leave Man City at the end of his contract this summer, signing a versatile young player in Gomez to replace the club legend could be the right move.
