Manchester City have been told they are set to benefit from PSG’s “stupid” decision to sell Gianluigi Donnarumma this summer.

Donnarumma completed a €30 million transfer to the Etihad Stadium late in the transfer window after weeks of speculation linking him with a move to Pep Guardiola’s side.

PSG’s logic to allow a figure who was so pivotal in their Champions League success leave comparatively easily has been questioned by former Napoli star Faouzi Ghoulam.

Speaking to Corriere dello Sport, the Algeria international said: “PSG made a resounding mistake and showed disrespect to Gigio. They wanted to please Luis Enrique because he won the Champions League, but you can’t do that to an iconic player, who was decisive in their victories.

“Gigio is among the two or three strongest goalkeepers in the world and will be among the 10 for the Ballon d’Or, but if Guardiola hadn’t arrived, what would have happened to him?

“Let me be clear: Lucas Chevalier is very strong, but if Donnarumma really hadn’t been as good with his feet as has been claimed – enough to encourage PSG to change their goalkeeper – would someone like Pep have taken him? This reason makes no sense.

“I live in Paris and I know the people: I know how much he was loved and respected by his team-mates and his fans. It’s an inexplicable choice. A stupid thing.”

Why did PSG sell Donnarumma?

While there were doubts over PSG’s happiness with Donnarumma due to his ability with the ball at his feet, the ultimate reason that they sold the former AC Milan goalkeeper was down to his contract situation.

PSG did tie him to a new deal but there was a dispute between the two parties that led to the 26-year-old being put up for sale as there was only a year left on his agreement.

Interest came from Manchester United and Chelsea, but ultimately City were the team who made the move, signing Donnarumma in a €30m deal – above his €24m Estimated Transfer Value (ETV).

Time will tell who made the right decision in this controversial transfer battle.
