German star Ilkay Gundogan has asked to leave Barcelona and could be heading for a shock return to his former club Manchester City on a free transfer. The midfielder is unhappy at the Nou Camp and wants a return to England at the next available opportunity.
Gundogan agreed to move to the Nou Camp last summer after spending seven glorious years with the Cityzens, and the Gelsenkirchen-born star is already in contact with his former coach Pep Guardiola regarding a potential return. Other teams are interested in signing the 33-year-old central midfielder, including former club Borussia Dortmund and German giants Bayern Munich.
Gundogan had been left out of Barcelona’s squad for their last game, and rumours regarding a move away followed shortly thereafter.
It is understood that Barcelona need to balance the books to avoid Financial Fair Play issues, and Gundogan is one of the top earners at the club. Gundogan may be allowed to leave on a free transfer as the player had originally arrived in Spain for no fee.
