Bruno Fernandes scored a lasp-gasp winner to earn Man United a dramatic 2-1 victory over Rangers in a Battle of Britain at Old Trafford.
Ruben Amorim‘s side appeared to have thrown away three crucial points in the closing stages when Harry Maguire was punished by a clinical equaliser by Cyriel Dessers.
Man United had been denied a first half opener after Mattijs de Ligt saw a header controversially ruled out for a foul.
The hosts eventually went ahead when Jack Butland punched a corner into his own net in the second half.
Rangers appeared to have grabbed a point with Dessers’ 88th minute leveller, only for Fernandes to arrive at the far post to convert a Lisandro Martinez cross to score a stoppage time winner.
Mail Sport’s Chris Wheeler and Calum Crowe rate the players at Old Trafford.

Rangers were left deflated after suffering the late defeat in a blow to their Europa League hopes
MAN UTD (4-3-3)
ALTAY BAYINDIR – 6 – First appearance in Europe for United and made smart saves from Propper and Igamane. Still looked a bit shaky under the high ball and had no chance to react for the equaliser.
LENY YORO – 5 – A little isolated with Diallo playing as a wing-back and had his hands full with Yilmaz. Yoro’s foul on Propper also saw De Light’s first half header chalked off.
MATTHIJS DE LIGT – 6 – Denied his second goal for United since joining from Bayern Munich in the summer and replaced by Maguire at half-time, having started ahead of the England defender.
LISANDRO MARTINEZ – 7 – Returned to United’s back three as a calm presence on the left-hand side, and got forward to test Butland with a piledriver then set up the late winner with a great assist
AMAD DIALLO – 7 – Looked lively against the club where he had a difficult loan spell in 2022, but couldn’t convert when one-on-one with the keeper in the first half.
TOBY COLLYER – 6.5 – Handed only his second start for the first-team, and was caught in possession early on, but recovered well after that and put Butland under pressure for the own-goal.

Fernandes pulled the strings in a deeper role before coming up with a fantastic winner
BRUNO FERNANDES – 8 – Played in a deeper role where he could pull the strings for United. Made some excellent passes and then came up with a fantastic winner in injury-time.
DIOGO DALOT – 6 – Started on the left again but switched to the right of a back-three when Malacia replaced Yoro soon after half-time. United need Luke Shaw back and another left-back.
CHRISTIAN ERIKSEN – 7 – Played as one of the two No.10s after his assist for Diallo against Southampton and linked up well with the little Ivorian. The goal came from his well-delivered corner.
JOSHUA ZIRKZEE – 6.5 – The Dutchman was picked ahead of Hojlund to lead the attack for the second game in a row and put in a shift, but had few opportunities to make an impact.
ALEJANDRO GARNACHO – 7 – Started despite talks over a move to Chelsea and offered United’s biggest threat early on with two efforts. Had another cleared off the line on the hour as well.
Subs: Heaton, Onana, Maguire (for De Ligt 46, 5), Hojlund (for Zirkzee 82), Malacia (for Yoro 55, 6.5), Casemiro, Antony, Ugarte (for Collyer 73, 6), Mainoo (for Eriksen 73, 6)
Scorers: Butland og 52, Fernandes 90+2

Head coach: Ruben Amorim 7 – will be relieved to get this win under his belt after all the talk about his dressing-room meltdown at the weekend.
RANGERS (4-2-3-1)
JACK BUTLAND – 5 – Had missed a few games recently after a hospital scare. Back in the team against his former club, he had an absolute howler when he punched Eriksen’s corner into his own net to gift United the opening goal.
JAMES TAVERNIER – 7 – Poor clearance gifted Garnacho a chance to shoot. But the Rangers captain grew into the game and got stronger, stepping out of defence to make some good tackles and interceptions higher up the pitch.
ROBIN PROPPER – 5 – Fell in a heap when De Ligt looked like he’d headed United in front from a corner. Went down so cheaply under pressure from Yoro and was really lucky to get away with it. Embarrassingly soft.
LEON BALOGUN – 6 – His experience always looked like it would be vital on a night like this. But he went down clutching his ankle in the closing stages of the first half and didn’t reappear after the break. A big miss.
JEFTE – 5 – Shot straight at Bayindir in second half when he had a chance to equalise. Totally switched off and allowed Fernandes in at the back post to score the winner right at the death. No excuse for that kind of error.
CONNOR BARRON – 5 – Probably wouldn’t have played had Mohamed Diomande been available. Typically industrious in the way that he got around the pitch but was forced off injured at half-time. Lack of depth was exposed when he went off.

Robin Propper was embarrassingly soft when he went down for Man United’s disallowed goal
NICO RASKIN – 6.5 – Driving run forward from midfield ended with a clear sight of goal inside the opening 10 minutes but the Belgian midfielder couldn’t sort out his feet in order to get a shot away. Stuck to his task fairly well.
VACLAV CERNY – 7 – Bright and creative throughout. Cut inside on to his left foot and forced a decent save from Bayindir in the early stages of the second half. One of the walking wounded as he went off injured in second half.
NEDIM BAJRAMI – 5 – United managed to squeeze the game in such a way that there really wasn’t much space for Bajrami to exploit in the No 10 role. Was eventually overrun in the middle of the pitch.
RIDVAN YILMAZ – 6 – Played further forward and had a great chance to open the scoring when he met Tavernier’s lofted pass on the volley. But his finish lacked conviction. Gave the ball away too often and ended up playing at right-back.
HAMZA IGAMANE – 6 – The Moroccan striker has been in brilliant form over the past couple of months with 12 goals in his past 14 games. Tested Bayindir with a good low shot in first half. Never got much change out of De Ligt.

Cyriel Dessers came off the bench to score a brilliant equaliser for Rangers in the 88th minute
Subs: Ross McCausland (for Balogun 46) – 6.5 – Played out wide in a largely defensive role as part of a major reshuffle at half-time. Had to do a lot of tracking back.
Bailey Rice (for Barron 46) – 7 – Going up against the likes of Fernandes and Eriksen in midfield when he came off the bench, he played some lovely passes. Teed-up a great chance for Dessers.
Findlay Curtis (for Cerny 60) – 6.5 – Made his debut against Fraserburgh last weekend and then came off the bench against Man United at Old Trafford. Quite a few days for the youngster.
Cyriel Dessers (for Bajrami 71) – 7.5 – Came off the bench to score a brilliant equaliser. Stunning finish as he took a touch, turned, and then thumped the ball into Bayindir’s bottom corner.
Leon King (for Yilmaz) – 6 – Sent on in the immediate aftermath of Dessers’ equaliser to help protect things at the back. But Fernandes struck right at the death.
Scorer: Dessers 88
