Manchester United have confirmed that Ruud Van Nistelrooy has left the club after holding talks with new head coach Ruben Amorim on Monday.

The club legend oversaw an unbeaten four game run as interim boss since replacing Erik ten Hag and admitted he was keen to stay on in a role following Sunday’s 3-0 Premier League win over Leicester.

Van Nistelrooy returned to Old Trafford in the summer after being convinced by former boss Erik ten Hag to take up an assistant role and later replacing his fellow countryman on a temporary basis before Amorim’s arrival.

It was hoped by a large proportion of United supporters who witnessed the 48-year-old’s emotional and teary-eyed farewell with the Stretford End on Sunday that it wouldn’t be the last time they see him in the dugout, but that isn’t the case.

Amorim was given the last say on whether he wanted to incorporate the Dutchman into his backroom team and has ultimately decided against doing so with Van Nistelrooy now leaving the club.

United confirmed the news in a statement on Monday evening where they thanked him for his coaching contribution and insisted the former striker will always be a ‘legend’ at Old Trafford.

The 13-time Premier League champions – who currently sit 13th in the league standings – also confirmed Ten Hag’s other former assistants Rene Hake, Jelle ten Rouwelaar and Pieter Morel have also departed.

The club statement read: ‘Manchester United can confirm that Ruud van Nistelrooy has left the club. Ruud rejoined in the summer and has taken charge of the team for the past four matches as interim head coach.

‘Ruud is, and always will be, a Manchester United legend.

‘We are grateful for his contribution and the way in which he has approached his role throughout his time with the club. He will always be very welcome at Old Trafford.

‘Rene Hake, Jelle ten Rouwelaar and Pieter Morel have also departed and we wish them all well for the future.

‘We will confirm the full men’s first team coaching composition in due course,’ United concluded.

Meanwhile, Amorim is expected to name a coaching team consisting of  his Sporting Lisbon assistants Carlos Fernandes, Adelio Candido and Emanuel Ferro.

The Portuguese tactician also wants to recruit goalkeeper coach Jorge Vital and sports scientist Paulo Barreira with their exits still being negotiated with Sporting.

Amorim officially began work at United on Monday, meeting club CEO Omar Berrada, sporting director Dan Ashworth and technical director Jason Wilcox at the club’s Carrington training base on Monday.

However, he will only be able to work with a limited contingent of United’s first-team with key stars away with their respective nations during the international break.

Amorim will then oversee his first game in charge against Ipswich upon the Premier League’s resumption on November 24.
