Manchester United defender Lisandro Martinez looks set to miss the rest of the Premier League season with a serious knee injury.

The Argentina international exited Sunday’s 2-0 home defeat by Crystal Palace on a stretcher and was visibly in a lot of pain.

According to TyC Sports journalist Gaston Edul, a scan has since confirmed that Martinez has torn his anterior cruciate ligament.

If that report is correct then Martinez is unlikely to be fully fit again for at least another six months, possibly much longer.

The injury therefore could see him miss some of United’s games next season, as well as all of their remaining fixtures in the current campaign.

Martinez was signed by former boss Erik ten Hag, but he has since emerged as a key player for new manager Ruben Amorim.

Amorim prefers to play with a 3-4-3 formation, which means he likes to line up his team with three central defenders.

But Martinez’s injury looks set to leave the United squad a little short of options in that area.

It could result in more game time for Victor Lindelof alongside the likes of Leny Yoro, Harry Maguire and Matthijs de Ligt.

More to follow.
