Man United legend calls for Erik ten Hag to be SACKED and urges the club to appoint an elite manager who ‘can attract the biggest players in the world’

Former Manchester United attacker Dwight Yorke has urged the club to sack Erik ten Hag after only two Premier League games this season.

United kicked off their campaign with a late home winner against Fulham but fell short against Brighton on Saturday, with the Brazilian Joao Pedro scoring the third and final goal of the game in the 95th minute.

The tough start of the season follows the Red Devils’ eighth-place finish in the previous Premier League term, with the FA Cup triumph being the essential factor in ten Hag’s new deal at the club.

Although earlier reports stated that United were looking for a new manager, it ultimately ended with a contract extension until June 2026 with the Dutchman, a deal indicating support from new sporting director Dan Ashworth and technical director Jason Wilcox.

However, Man United legend Yorke is confident the 54-year-old manager should be dismissed and replaced by an ‘elite manager’ in order to get the club back to their past triumphs.

In an interview with Lord Ping, Yorke urges the Red Devils to appoint a new manager according to their players and standards: ‘That is a manager that the fans and the players can really get behind and help take the club back to the top.

‘Erik ten Hag is a good manager but there is a difference between being a good manager and being an elite manager. United need a manager that comes with pedigree.

‘Until United get that manager in, they will struggle, there is an ideal candidate out there that can take the club forward with huge lift and match that expectation,’ he added.

The 52-year-old Trinbagonian has urged the club to explore the option of sacking the ten Hag if the team fails to achieve the heights set ahead of the season and before the new deal agreed upon.

Previous reports suggested that Sir Jim Ratcliffe and United’s management conducted a lengthy end-of-season review after the team’s FA Cup triumph, followed by the contract extension and the appointment of two new assistants: Ruud van Nistelrooy and Rene Hake.

Yorke said: ‘There will be no hiding place at United for Erik ten Hag and even though he has been given a new deal, the club are expecting improved results very quickly.

‘If United don’t have a good start to the season then it will send out a really negative message and the owners will feel that. If it carries on badly then Sir Jim Ratcliffe won’t hesitate to make a change.’

Speaking about the new ‘elite’ managers suitable for such a pressured role at Man United, Yorke highlights two Real Madrid legends: Zinedine Zidane and Carlo Ancelotti.

‘Ten Hag hasn’t got it in his locker to attract big names, Zidane is an elite manager that can attract the biggest players in the world and get everyone back onside,’ said the Red Devils legend.

‘The word elite is a rare thing, Carlo Ancelotti is one of them, United need an elite manager on side to take the club forward and get that momentum back and until United do that, it’s going to be a dogfight.’

Previously, Carlo Ancelotti ended speculations about taking over Brazil’s managerial position by extending his contract with Los Blancos until 2026 and adding that Galacticos would be the last club of his coaching career.

Meanwhile, the Frenchman was a well-known target for United for a long time, and was said to be closely monitoring ten Hag’s situation over the last summer.

Zidane hadn’t managed a club since his second spell in charge of Real Madrid ended in 2021, following the tension with the president, Florentino Perez.

Yorke admits the pressure at United remains high but discloses that he thinks the issue is ten Hag’s attitude: ‘I see no similarities between Erik Ten Hag and Sir Alex Ferguson. Ten Hag’s personality is nowhere near Sir Alex.

‘Ten Hag is under enormous amounts of pressure this season and he knows that anything he does wrong, that will be him out the door.

‘I want to see that attitude in his approach to games, he needs to come out fighting and show more of that. Maybe he’ll think ‘to hell with it’ and do things his own way,’ the Man United legend added.
