Man United plans for ‘Wembley of the North’ receive green light from local authority as they unanimously back project with key decision makers leaning towards new 100k stadium

Manchester United‘s plans for a new Old Trafford have taken another step forward after winning unanimous support from the local authority.

Officials at Trafford council last night unequivocally backed the plans, which could see a new 100,000-capacity stadium at the heart of a vast regeneration programme. 

They will now seek a ‘top class consultant team’ that will be charged with ‘helping to shape a high-profile strategic masterplan for the regeneration of the area’.

On Saturday, government voiced their support for the scheme with Chancellor Rachel Reeves describing it as ‘a shining example’ of their plans to promote economic growth.

And further, important support has now arrived from Trafford council, who will be key to a project they believe will be ‘transformational’.

At a town hall meeting in the shadows of Old Trafford a short debate on the plans – which officials believe will add £7.3bn to the economy and provide more than 90,000 jobs and 15,000 homes – was held before the green light was given in the shape of a verbal vote.

United are expected to press ahead with a new stadium and demolish Old Trafford

United will fund any stadium development. However, support from public bodies is needed for infrastructure around the wider regeneration and would include transport and housing.

A decision on whether to build a new, 100,000-capacity home or refurbish the existing stadium and add around 14,000 seats to take it to 87,000 is expected at the end of the season.

Currently, those involved are working towards a new stadium following a recommendation from a task force which includes Gary Neville, Greater Manchester mayor Andy Burnham and London 2012 supremo Lord Coe.

The meeting heard the plans would be ‘huge for the area’, with one councillor describing the plans as ‘one of the biggest endeavours Trafford council has ever embarked upon’.  The prospect of a new stadium, dubbed the ‘Wembley of the North’, hosting international football was also aired.

Councillor Liz Patel, executive member for economy and regeneration at Trafford council, said: ‘I am delighted these plans have been approved by the council executive. As the report says, this is one of the most significant opportunities for urban renewal in Trafford and the results will be great for the area and the surrounding region.

‘This is a hugely exciting project and working with our partners and private developers, we will be looking to create thousands of new homes, new neighbourhoods, and a world-class setting for the Manchester United stadium.

‘Together with Manchester United, Greater Manchester Combined Authority and Salford City Council, we will make sure these plans will benefit everyone including local residents, businesses and football fans.’
