One Manchester United star is reportedly hopeful that the club will extend his contract beyond the end of the 2024-25 season.

United, who are three games into the Ruben Amorim era, are desperate for the Portuguese to be the man to bring the glory days back to Old Trafford after what has been a difficult time.

The Red Devils have not won the top flight in more than 11 years, while their eighth place finish last season was the club’s worst finish in the Premier League era.

Amorim has won two and drawn one of his three matches in charge, but the 39-year-old will face his biggest challenge yet when they travel to Arsenal on Wednesday.

The former Sporting Lisbon boss has so far used his favoured 3-4-3 formation and it is expected that he will look to the transfer market in an attempt to turn around United’s fortunes.

However, according to the Manchester Evening News, one star is hoping he can remain a part of Amorim’s plans despite having just seven months left to run on his deal.

The player in question is Harry Maguire, with the centre back having made 216 appearances for United since joining from Leicester for £80million in 2019 – a fee that is still a world record for a defender.

The report claims that United do have an option to extend Maguire’s contract by a year, but are yet to do so.

The 31-year-old has battled fitness issues so far this campaign, starting just three Premier League games.

However, Maguire did return from an eight-week lay-off against Everton on Sunday as he played the final 34 minutes of United’s 4-0 win.

The report goes onto add that Maguire, who will be free to negotiate pre-contract agreements with overseas clubs from January 1, is hopeful the club do take up the option.

Maguire’s fitness issues could be a potential concern to United after the 64-cap England defender also missed the Euros in the summer having failed to prove his fitness in time following an injury.

He has been a divisive figure at Old Trafford having initially impressed across his first few campaigns at the club.

But Maguire fell out of favour under Erik ten Hag and was stripped of the United captaincy ahead of the 2023-24 season.

In fact, the Dutchman attempted to sell the 31-year-old to West Ham and the clubs agreed a £30m fee that summer, before Maguire expressed his desire to stay at Old Trafford.

Maguire went onto play 31 times last season and stepped up in the absence of several other defenders in what was an otherwise difficult time for United.

He has featured 10 times in all competitions this time around and could be in line for his first start in two months against the Gunners, with Lisandro Martinez suspended for the blockbuster clash at the Emirates.
