Manchester United chiefs have created a problem they have to fix by sacking Ruben Amorim – but this is proving easier said than done at Old Trafford
Manchester United bosses are split over who to appoint as the club’s next manager. Owners the Glazers and Sir Jim Ratcliffe have started the search for a new boss following the sacking of Ruben Amorim.
But the powers that be at Old Trafford cannot decide on whether to appoint someone now – or wait until the summer instead.
Names in the frame include Oliver Glasner, Enzo Maresca, Laurent Blanc, Xavi, Mauricio Pochettino and Zinedine Zidane. Darren Fletcher has replaced Amorim on a caretaker basis and could be in charge for United’s next two games, while senior figures decided what to do.
United’s priority this season is to secure a top four finish and Champions League qualification. This is viewed as being too much to expect of managerial novice Fletcher.
United know they could appoint Glasner in the coming weeks, provided a deal can be struck with Crystal Palace. Glasner is viewed as one of the leading candidates, following the impressive job he’s done at Palace.

But there are still reservations about Glasner’s inexperience when it comes to managing a huge club like United.
Pochettino and even Thomas Tuchel are also under consideration. But this would mean Old Trafford bosses waiting until after the World Cup to try and lure one of them to United.
Pochettino will be in charge of host nation USA at the finals, while Tuchel will lead England’s assault on the tournament. In the meantime, should United decide to bide their time, the worry is what more damage could be done between now and the end of the season.
United can ill-afford a second season in succession without European football. And the minimum requirement for whoever is in charge is a top six finish.
Amorim was sacked after 14 months in charge, following his rant in the wake of United’s 1-1 draw at Elland Road. But it’s understood Ratcliffe & Co had decided to axe Amorim before the clash with Leeds, having lost faith in the Portuguese coach.
His exit is the latest undignified chapter in the toxic tenure of Ratcliffe and INEOS. Amorim departs with United sixth in the table, following one win in the last five outings.
