Ruben Amorim’s final transfer decision as Manchester United could be overturned by his managerial successor in a move that could benefit one player in particular
As Manchester United embark on the post-Ruben Amorim era, Andre Onana may be feeling optimistic about what lies ahead. That’s after the loan outcast has expressed a desire to resurrect his career at Old Trafford if he returns to the club.
Onana’s loan move to Turkish outfit Trabzonspor was Amorim’s final major transfer call in England. The former United No. 1 was sent packing in mid-September, a couple of weeks after Senne Lammens was brought in as United’s latest starting stopper.
This marked the end of a turbulent two-year period with Onana as United’s primary keeper. For every positive contribution, it seemed like Onana made two other errors and never truly found his footing as a starter.
Despite this, the 29-year-old remains on United’s books and could potentially return to his parent club this summer. However, Lammens’ impressive start in England seems to have dashed any hopes of him reclaiming the No. 1 spot.
Onana joined United in 2023 when he was reunited with his former Ajax coach, Erik ten Hag. Despite facing criticism, Amorim stood by the Cameroon keeper – who was left out of their Africa Cup of Nations squad – for the most part.

Turkey’s Altay Bayindir had his opportunity to shine in goal amid Onana’s inconsistent performances. While it may seem like Onana’s time in Manchester is over, he could potentially make a comeback under a new manager.
The i Paper reported in November that he is eager to reclaim his position as United’s No. 1 once he returns from the Super Lig. Trabzonspor are reportedly open to making his move permanent, however, after being impressed with his performances so far.
Fatih Tekke’s team currently sits third in the Super Lig, which makes it unlikely they’d agree to recall the player. However, without knowing who will replace Amorim and their views on the situation, nothing can be ruled out completely.
Lammens’ agent has even claimed United planned to keep Onana at Old Trafford to work alongside Lammens. This suggests Onana still has supporters in Manchester.
In reality, there are likely those at United who hope Trabzonspor, or any another team, come forward with an acceptable offer to buy the player. But if no-one is willing to meet his valuation, a return to Old Trafford could be a possibility.
Onana is contracted to United until 2028, having signed a five-year deal when he joined the club. And while Lammens is steadily establishing himself as the clear favourite among United’s goalkeepers, every team needs a reliable back-up.
This isn’t to say that Onana would be happy as a deputy, though it might be his only choice if he’s adamant on remaining at United. But the successor to Amorim might see a player with 53 international caps and a Champions League runner-up as a useful second choice.
It’s a logical thought given Onana had a much higher reputation when United signed him from Inter Milan for £43.8million nearly three years ago. While many supporters may not want to see more of the player in red, whomever takes over from Amorim might have different ideas.
