Manchester United spent €250 million on new players during the summer transfer window, and it has now been revealed that the Red Devils worked a discount for one of their major arrivals.
Ruben Amorim’s side primarily bolstered their attack with the eye-catching arrivals of Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo and Benjamin Sesko, but they also recruited goalkeeper Senne Lammens from Royal Antwerp.
The former Royal Antwerp keeper has yet to make his debut for Man Utd, but the director of football of the Belgian club, Marc Overmars, has revealed that they had to let the young shot-stopper go.
Lammens joined United in a deal worth €21 million just short of the transfer deadline – and Overmars says the Red Devils drove a hard bargain.
“When Manchester United wanted Senne Lammens, we said: ‘Listen, we’re not Brighton or Brentford, with whom you have to negotiate for weeks.’ With us, things have to move quickly,” Overmars told Voetbal Primeur.
“With Manchester United, we started as losers on deadline day. We had a deal with Aston Villa, but Emi Martinez still had to leave, and Senne didn’t want to go there. Only then did Man United make their first offer. Lower than Aston Villa. Four hours later, we finally reached an agreement.”
Jury out on new signings
Signing Lammens for a discounted price should be regarded as something of a win for United given their frustrating summer overall.
The Red Devils spent a particularly long period negotiating Mbeumo’s move from Brentford, and while the Cameroon international has been the best performer of their new signings, it was a transfer they would have hoped to complete more quickly – and ideally for a lower price.
United also splashed out more than €75 million to sign RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko, who has yet to record a goal or an assist in his first six matches for his new side.
