Manchester United are in ‘direct contact’ with Girona over Miguel Gutierrez, according to a report.

The Red Devils are closing in on the first signing of the Ruben Amorim era, with Cerro Porteno youngster Diego Leon set to join the club imminently. A deal for the 17-year-old left-back has been all but wrapped up and the Paraguayan will link up with the side in the summer.

Leon, however, is a signing for the future and Man Utd have more than enough problems in the present that also need to be sorted out. The signing of Leon speaks to the Red Devils’ desire to shore up the left-back position for years to come.

Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia have been deemed unreliable due to their fitness problems and Man Utd are determined to bolster the left side of their backline.

And to do this, they will not only sign Leon but also another, more senior left-back.

Man Utd in Gutierrez talks

In October, FootballTransfers exclusively revealed that Girona star Miguel Gutierrez had become Man Utd’s top left-back target and TEAMtalk now claims that ‘direct contact’ between the two clubs is already taking place.

It is asserted that the former Real Madrid prospect is now keen to leave the Catalan side after staying on board in the summer in the face of significant interest, including from Man Utd.

After surprisingly qualifying for the Champions League last term, Girona have been brought back down to earth this season and currently only sit ninth in LaLiga.

It is further claimed that Girona have given Gutierrez the green light to negotiate with Man Utd and that there are ‘no obstacles’ that could prevent a January deal, with the club willing to sell for less than his €35 million release clause.

Even at a reduced price, it remains to be seen if Man Utd can afford a deal given that they may have to sell first before they can buy amid concerns about financial regulations.
