Manchester United are looking to beat Arsenal to the signing of Blackburn Rovers youngster Igor Tyjon, according to a report.
The 17-year-old has been making headlines in recent weeks as he has decided to leave Blackburn when his contract expires in the summer. Tyjon has made three senior appearances to date, although only one has come this season.
The teenage striker, who has alternated between representing Poland and England at the international level, has earned rave reviews for his performances in youth football.
His availability has sparked the interest of various clubs at home and abroad. In January, Arsenal were in talks with Blackburn over a deal to sign Tyjon immediately, but no agreement could be reached.
According to TEAMtalk, the Gunners remain the firm favourites to sign the prospect in the summer, but Man Utd have now also held talks with the player over a potential move.
Man Utd want Tyjon
Blackburn knocked back three Arsenal bids for Tyjon despite his refusal to sign a new contract, and they will now only receive training compensation from his next move.
The Gunners are still in a strong position to sign the youngster, as they laid the groundwork for a potential move with their previous talks, but the report claims that “the landscape is shifting.”
Other clubs, like Man Utd, can offer an equally attractive pathway to Premier League football. Liverpool, Leeds and Newcastle are said to have held talks with him as well.
Moreover, previous reports indicated that interest from abroad is just as strong. Top-flight clubs from Poland, for example, are ready to offer Tyjon immediate first-team football, while he also has suitors in Italy, Germany and elsewhere.
For now, the player remains stuck at Blackburn and will surely be frustrated that the struggling Championship side dug their heels in in January. Rovers have scored the joint-second-fewest goals in the league, but Tyjon ruined his chances of making any more senior appearances by refusing to sign fresh terms.
