Manchester United and Real Madrid have been dealt a massive blow after news that Bayern Munich have made ‘significant progress’ in talks over a new contract for Alphonso Davies.

Davies’ current deal is set to expire at the end of the season and it had been expected that the 24-year-old would sign a pre-contract agreement with Real in January, while United were also believed to be pushing for the Canadian.

However, Sky Sport Germany have claimed that United are ‘aware’ that Davies is ‘likely’ to sign a new deal with Bayern after the left-back held fresh talks with the Bundesliga giants.

Key figures are said to have already been discussed, with Davies making ‘significant concessions’ to Bayern over his salary and the club ‘fully focused’ on sealing a deal, although there are still important details to iron out.

While talks are believed to be advanced, an agreement has not been struck as of yet, although Bayern will hold further talks before Christmas, with the player now willing to commit his long-term future to the German side.

Bayern had offered Davies a new five-year contract this year with a gross salary of more than €13 million but the defender was understood to be demanding closer to €20m plus bonuses, leading to negotiations falling through.

The collapse of talks led Davies to explore his options, with Real keen to sign him, and the La Liga side were hoping to convince the Bayern star to hold off on renewing his contract so that they could sign him on a free in 2025.

Bayern had withdrawn their offer to Davies and proceeded with the risk of the Canadian captain potentially leaving on a free, having rejected lowball offers from Real over the summer.

But with Davies’ performances improving this season and the player also lowering his demands, Bayern returned to the table with a new and improved offer.

While the news would be a blow to United and Real, it would mark a significant coup for Bayern, particularly with Jamal Musiala also close to agreeing an extension that would make him the club’s highest earner.
